Maryland Antler Point Restrictions

Explained in case someone is not sure, in Maryland you can only Harvest “2 bucks” per year that have “Two or Fewer Points” on each antler present, (that’s a 2 buck limit on bucks 4 points or less) with include all spikes with antlers longer than 3 inches in length (spikes that are 3 inches or less count as a doe tag) Why do they count as a doe tag? because antlers less than 3″ inches can be hidden from the Hunters sight by the deer’s ear63

SHOULD I SHOOT “SPIKE” BUCKS ????

There is many studies that argue both sides, “Shoot or Not to Shoot Spikes” On one side they say a 1.5 year old spike can grow into a decent buck at 3.4 -4.5 years sometimes?, at a much lower percent, but they take an average of 2-3 more years to become as big as a forked antler buck and defiantly not a record-breaking buck. On the other side they say a 1.5 year old spike is a “lower quality buck” if weather and nutrition are not a factor, because he  be a “forked antler buck,  or at least be a 4 or 6 point buck”at 1.5 years of age under normal conditions. By letting the spikes go they will become a breeding buck in their 2nd year. My personal choice after reading both studies is take out “all spikes” when possible, or to at least harvest the older big body or more mature spikes (2.5 year or older spikes) It’s best to let the 4 and 6 point bucks “Go and Grow” to become the bigger, better quality bucks we want breeding & to harvest. Bottom line it’s still the hunters personal choice to harvest bucks according to their local state laws. ( here is two good Spike buck studies below, one study has 26 years of research, its a must read article on spikes)

This a Must Read report if you want to know about spikes and how they effect the herd
